Business context
Choose operational lot-traceability software, excluding food-safety judgments, compliance assurances and restaurant POS.
A small-batch food manufacturer must connect received ingredient lots to production and the finished products leaving the business. A stock quantity cannot answer which incoming material belongs to a particular finished batch.
The decision concerns operational records. It is separate from determining food safety, prescribing a recall or establishing compliance with a jurisdiction’s requirements.
Start with the lot relationships
| Record | Relationship to inspect |
|---|---|
| Received ingredient lot | Supplier receipt and batch reference |
| Production batch | Ingredient lots actually used |
| Finished goods | Batch identity and relevant expiry context |
| Delivery | Finished batch associated with shipment |
| Adjustment or rework | Changed quantity and retained lot relationship |
Ask whether the system records actual consumption or merely suggests material from a recipe. Planned inputs and physically used material are different records.
Candidate scope and entitlement
Katana’s batch-tracking documentation describes batch numbers and optional expiry dates across purchasing, manufacturing and sales. It identifies the feature as part of the Full Traceability add-on. Confirm that entitlement; the inventory product name alone does not establish access.
Provender describes production and lot traceability for specialty food brands. It is another candidate direction for a food-specific operating model. Its performance and compliance language is supplier marketing, not evidence established here. Request documentation for the actual relationships needed.
Evaluate split lots and mixed deliveries
Use fictional ingredients and customers. Receive two lots of the same ingredient. Produce a batch using both, then deliver portions to two customers. Ask the supplier to show the relationship in both directions.
Record an ingredient substitution and stock adjustment. Inspect whether the record still identifies what was used and where goods were delivered. Distinguish an actual batch relationship from a recipe or product-level search.
Next, inspect a partially used ingredient lot with material still in stock. The team should understand whether the view represents the received quantity, current balance or quantity used in that production batch.
This is a proposed evaluation, not a test performed by the publication.
Select records the operation can sustain
Useful traceability depends on the capability and the business recording relevant events. Identify receipt, consumption and delivery owners before selecting software. An unmaintained feature does not supply a dependable record.
