Business context

Choose job-routing capabilities, excluding manufacturing ERP costs and generic platform rankings.

A make-to-order job shop must represent how a particular job moves through operations. The finished item is only part of the requirement. Similar jobs can follow different sequences, need outside processing or change after work begins.

A product catalogue and stock balance do not establish that a system can represent the current routing and commitments already made against it. Select around that variability.

Inspect the routing record

Job-shop conditionRequirement
Several operations precede completionOrdered routing and operation state
Machines or skills constrain workWorkstation or resource planning context
Customer changes the specificationIdentifiable job and revision
Outside processing occursExternal operation retaining job context
Material has already been consumedPlanned work distinct from recorded work

Decide whether the shop reuses established routes or creates substantially different routes per order. That distinction matters more than a broad manufacturing label.

Two relevant product directions

MRPeasy documents product routings and updates to planned manufacturing orders. It is a candidate for work represented through a reusable product and production-planning model. Its documentation gives concrete scheduling behavior, which should be checked against actual operation times.

WorkCell describes make-to-order manufacturing with job-specific BOMs, routings and engineering changes. That supplier-described scope is relevant where individual jobs vary substantially. Operational improvement language remains a vendor claim; no implementation or benchmark is reported here.

Ask both candidates to demonstrate the proposed edition, including the treatment of partially completed work. A configurable routing does not necessarily establish revision control for every historical record.

Evaluate a mid-job change

Create a fictional job with several operations and one external step. Record some completed work, then change the requested specification. Inspect the current routing, consumed material and operation needing a decision.

Check another planned job using the original product routing. A changed reusable definition should not be confused with historical work already performed. Record whether the process needs another revision or manual review.

Choose a maintainable representation

Reusable routes suit repeatable work. Highly variable orders may justify stronger job-specific definitions. Identify who maintains the route and who authorizes changes after production starts.
